How to Tame Unruly Hair, or Smart Discipline

How to Tame Unruly Hair, or Smart Discipline

In advertisements, on runways, and on red carpets, we most often see beauties with silky, long, straight hair. In many areas of life — from Olympic sports and ballet to serious financial and political institutions — women’s hair is expected above all to be smooth and well-controlled. But what about those whom nature has gifted with wayward curls? There are care methods that can help make a hairstyle neater and transform frizzy, sticking-out curls into magnificent, well-behaved waves.

Why Does It Rebel?

Whether hair is manageable or not is determined by our genes. Straight, smooth hair has a round cross-section, while curly hair has an oval-shaped cross-section, and the characteristics of this oval determine the diameter of the curl. As a rule, the tighter the curls, the drier and more porous the hair tends to be. If the hair is also fine, it often tangles, the hairstyle easily becomes frizzy, and individual strands may stick out — especially in high humidity. However, air that is too dry can also make styling difficult — for example, in winter, when central heating is on. Frequent contact with hats can also cause static electricity in the hair.

Increased frizz is not always linked to damage. Even completely healthy natural hair can be frizzy simply because it is naturally fine and curly. However, damaged hair is almost always difficult to style. Damage can be caused by many factors — bleaching during coloring, chemical perms, heat stress from hot styling tools, intense ultraviolet exposure, and even frequent swimming in chlorinated pool water. All of these disrupt the integrity of the hair’s outer protective layer, increasing brittleness and porosity.

Coconut for Nourishment and Hydration

To make temperamental hair more manageable, it is necessary to restore the protective layer and fill in damage within the cuticle structure. Hair masks with natural oils can help. An excellent solution is offered by the natural cosmetics manufacturer Alviana: based on organic coconut oil, it has developed a universal silicone-free product, 3 in 1 Coco Hair Care.

This product can be used in several ways. If left on washed hair for 2 minutes, it works as a conditioner. If the exposure time is extended to 10–20 minutes, it becomes a nourishing mask that adds shine and the desired manageability. A complex of plant proteins from wheat, corn, and soy gently coats each hair with a protective film, smoothing it, helping retain moisture, and reducing static electricity.

Finally, there is a third method for everyday use “on the go”: rub a small amount of the product between your wet palms and apply it as a leave-in treatment, smoothing flyaway ends and shaping beautiful curls.

What to Do — and What to Avoid?

  1. Regular shampoos often contain harsh sulfate surfactants (foaming agents) that dry out the hair and increase frizz. A better option is a mild, natural sulfate-free shampoo, especially micellar formulas.
  2. Rinse shampoos, conditioners, balms, and masks with cool water, directing the shower stream along the direction of hair growth — this helps reduce tangling.
  3. It’s better to dry hair not with a regular terry towel, but with a microfiber towel or soft cotton knit fabric — these options help keep the cuticle scales smoother.
  4. Porous hair loves natural silk: for extra smoothness, try silk pillowcases, silk sleep turbans, and silk cloths for drying hair after washing.
  5. It’s best to dry hair with a cool hairdryer (or without one at all). For straightening, use a round brush; for more natural curls, use a diffuser attachment. If you must use a hot hairdryer or flat iron, be sure to apply heat-protectant products.
