Polyphenols in Modern Skincare

Cosmetics with Vitis vinifera grape extract are popular among mid-range and premium consumers, valued for natural origin, antioxidants, anti-age benefits, and skin radiance.

Evolution has taught animals to escape from stress. Plants lack this ability—but instead, they have developed effective mechanisms to defend themselves against external aggression. Sun exposure, heat or cold, fungal infections—all these negative factors are countered by special protective compounds known as polyphenols. It is no coincidence that the highest concentrations of polyphenols are found in leaves and fruit skins (the areas of greatest exposure) as well as in seeds, which protect valuable genetic material.

Scientists have also identified the benefits of plant polyphenols for human skin. These remarkable compounds are powerful antioxidants that effectively neutralize free radicals responsible for damaging collagen fibers and accelerating the aging process. For this reason, plant extracts rich in polyphenols are widely used in cosmetics designed for mature skin. Among the most popular sources are green tea polyphenols (catechins), olives (oleuropein), pomegranate (punicalagin), and apple peel (quercetin). And, of course, resveratrol—found in high concentrations in the skins and seeds of red grape varieties—is rightfully considered the king of cosmetic polyphenols.

In laboratory studies, resveratrol has demonstrated the ability to reduce markers of photoaging and to activate antioxidant defense mechanisms, including Nrf2, in cellular and experimental model systems.
But that is not all. Experimental data from animal and cell-based studies suggest that resveratrol may suppress matrix metalloproteinases responsible for collagen degradation induced by ultraviolet exposure. At the level of cellular models, it has also been suggested that resveratrol can trigger autophagy—the cellular self-cleaning process that removes dysfunctional “waste” structures and shifts tissues into a more youthful and active state. A similar effect occurs during fasting or stress, when autophagy serves to reassess biological resources and recycle cellular debris. Together, these properties make resveratrol a highly effective ingredient in anti-aging cosmetic formulations.

In Switzerland, the grape variety Divico was developed, distinguished by its exceptional resistance to fungal diseases and cold stress. It is valued not only by organic winemakers seeking to minimize chemical treatments of the vines, but also by manufacturers of high-end cosmetics. According to the producer, extracts from this grape variety are among the leaders in antioxidant activity, as they contain exceptionally high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins, and other bioactive compounds.

Evoe grape-based cosmetics fully harness the benefits of this remarkable variety. During production, the grapes undergo an innovative hyperfermentation process that enables more intensive extraction of valuable components and enhances their bioavailability. Some Evoe products also contain precious grape seed oil, which synergistically enhances the antioxidant activity of the extract. In addition to grape extract, Evoe creams and serums are enriched with advanced biotechnological complexes derived from algae and sweet corn. These complexes provide additional energy to collagen-synthesizing fibroblasts, deeply hydrate and smooth the epidermal surface, soothe irritation, and deliver a luxurious texture.
