Creams Are Easy to Understand – But What Are Facial Fluids and Serums For?

Modern natural skincare has long moved beyond simple creams designed merely to ‘moisturise and nourish’. Today, facial skincare includes products with different textures and purposes, such as creams, fluids, serums and essences. Each type of product has its own intended use, formulation characteristics and mechanism of action.

The main purpose of any skincare routine is to support the skin’s physiological functions. This means:

·       preserving the integrity of the skin barrier;

·       maintaining an optimal moisture level;

·       protecting cells and extracellular structures from damaging factors.

Creams

Cream remains the most versatile type of skincare product. It is usually an emulsion combining water and lipids. As a result, a cream both moisturises the skin and reduces moisture loss by forming a thin protective layer on its surface.

In natural creams, the lipid components are often plant oils, butters such as shea and cocoa butter, squalane, waxes and other substances with properties similar to those of the skin’s own lipids. Formulations may also contain glycerine, hyaluronic acid, betaine and plant polysaccharides, which help retain water in the upper layers of the epidermis.

The most versatile creams are those suitable for all skin types and for use at any time of day.

4 Elements for Life 24H Cream is a fresh, lightweight cream with powerful moisturising and anti-ageing properties. It can be applied both morning and evening.

Many creams are formulated for specific skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive and mature skin. The German company Sanatur, known for its spirulina-based products, offers precisely this kind of targeted skincare.

SpiruSkin Balancing Cream is designed for oily skin. In addition to spirulina, it contains evening primrose oil, which is rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

SpiruSkin Intensive Cream is suitable for mature skin. Thanks to its carefully selected combination of valuable oils, spirulina and hyaluronic acid, it leaves the skin beautifully smooth. Both creams can be used in the morning and evening.

Day creams focus primarily on moisturising and protecting the skin, while night creams are designed to create optimal conditions for the regeneration processes that take place during sleep.

Montreux Skincare Multi-Protecting Day Cream is an innovative luxury skincare product created in line with the latest clean beauty principles. It contains an extract derived from the flowers and bulbs of Swiss narcissus, a powerful rejuvenating and brightening ingredient.

EVOE Day Cream Rosée du matin and EVOE Night Cream Rosée du soir, developed at the forefront of modern cosmetic science, provide comprehensive skincare throughout the day and night. Both products contain Swiss grape extract, which has exceptionally high antioxidant activity.

Fluids

A fluid differs from a cream primarily in its texture. It is a lighter emulsion with a lower oil content and a higher proportion of water. Fluids absorb quickly, do not leave the skin feeling as though it is covered by a heavy film, and are particularly comfortable for normal, combination and oily skin, as well as during warmer weather.

Despite their lightweight texture, modern natural fluids can effectively support the hydrolipid barrier through the use of lightweight plant oils, biotechnology-derived squalane and skin-compatible emollients.

Fluids are particularly well suited to younger skin that is prone to oiliness. During hot summer weather, a fluid can replace your usual cream, as the sebaceous glands become more active in the heat.

Alviana All Day Aloe Cream Fluid is a lightweight, comfortable product that provides intensive moisturisation both day and night. It contains 50% organic aloe vera gel and is intended primarily for combination and normal skin.

Serums

Serums are characterised by a high concentration of active ingredients. A serum is usually a targeted product. For example, there are serums designed for intensive hydration, antioxidant protection, soothing irritation or smoothing expression lines.

Depending on their purpose, serums may contain different forms of hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, Centella asiatica extract and extracts of other plants with proven effects on the epidermis and dermis, as well as antioxidants and soothing botanical ingredients.

However, a serum is not an alternative to a cream. Many serums contain very few lipids and do little to reduce the evaporation of water from the skin’s surface. When a cream is not applied afterwards, particularly in the case of dry skin, some moisture may be lost.

The most skin-compatible approach is therefore to apply products in sequence: first, a serum containing active ingredients, followed by a cream that helps lock in moisture and support the skin’s protective barrier.

Like the other products in the range, EVOE Pur Nectar Face Serum contains antioxidant-rich Swiss grape extract and the PhytoSpherix complex, which helps stimulate collagen production.

Montreux Skincare Super Glow Serum is a luxurious anti-ageing serum formulated with innovative natural ingredients.

SpiruSkin Hyaluron Eye & Face Essence is a deeply moisturising serum that perfectly complements a traditional face cream. It instantly refreshes the skin and replenishes moisture in the epidermis thanks to low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. The serum is also enriched with Argireline, which helps reduce tension in the facial muscles and diminish the appearance of expression lines.
