Vitamin D: Choosing the Best Option

Vitamin D: Choosing the Best Option

Most people are familiar with the benefits of vitamin D. This hormone-like substance plays a vital role in the body: it strengthens bones, supports immune function, regulates carbohydrate metabolism, and helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and certain tumors. It is also well known that during the colder months, the amount of vitamin D synthesized from sunlight is often insufficient. For this reason, supplementing with vitamin D can be especially beneficial.

Choosing the right vitamin D supplement, however, is not always easy. The market offers countless options—liquids, tablets, and capsules—made from different raw materials, varying in quality and price. What should you look for when making your choice?

Natural or Synthetic?

Vitamin D exists in two main forms: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is produced biotechnologically from yeast, while vitamin D3 is traditionally obtained from animal sources such as fish oil. However, due to ocean pollution, it can be difficult to guarantee that fish-derived products are free from heavy metals like mercury.

Vitamin D3 is also commonly sourced from lanolin, a waxy substance found in sheep’s wool. Both of these forms are non-vegan. For many years, vegans were advised to take vitamin D2, although it is less efficiently absorbed and eliminated from the body more quickly.

A major innovation has been the development of high-quality, plant-based vitamin D3 extracted from lichens and algae. This form is suitable for both vegans and non-vegans and offers excellent bioavailability.

Water-Based or Oil-Based?

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, making oil-based solutions the most natural and effective form. Water-based supplements are generally recommended only for individuals with impaired fat digestion, such as those with pancreatic disorders. It is also important to note that water-based formulas contain emulsifiers, which may cause sensitivity in some people.

Oil-based vitamin D is absorbed more slowly but remains active in the body for a longer period.

What Oil Is Used as a Base?

Many vitamin D products use common vegetable oils such as olive, sunflower, safflower, or soybean oil. To mask the taste, these products are often encapsulated.

One of the most advanced options today is vitamin D3 in MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil derived from coconut oil. During processing, coconut oil is refined to remove lauric acid, leaving primarily caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) acids. These fats are rapidly absorbed, quickly metabolized by the liver, and converted into readily available energy rather than being stored as body fat.

What Is the Optimal Dosage?

There is no universal dosage for vitamin D, as individual needs vary depending on factors such as season, skin pigmentation, latitude, age, and body weight. In the European Union, a daily intake of 400–800 IU is generally recommended.

For preventive use, low-dose oil solutions are especially practical. Dropper bottles allow for precise dosing and help minimize the risk of excessive intake.

Just One Drop a Day

Sanatur Vitamin D3 Oil 100% from Plants is a modern, convenient, and economical supplement. Each drop provides 12.5 mcg (500 IU) of high-quality plant-based vitamin D3 sourced from algae. This moderate dosage is suitable for regular use across age groups, including children over five and older adults.

Produced in Germany under strict quality control, the formula is based on pure coconut-derived MCT oil. Its mild, pleasant coconut taste makes it easy to take, while the fast absorption of MCT oil makes it an ideal morning supplement for a natural boost of energy and vitality.
